The Arrest of Jesus

This leading away of Jesus is illustrated less often than the preceding moments when Judas and the soldiers arrive to seize him. The torch and the ropes are details found only in John 18:3,12. The men pulling on Jesus' beard and hair and kicking him in the back reference what was taken to be Isaiah's prophecy of the Passion: "I have given my body to the strikers, and my cheeks to them that plucked them." On that text Augustine comments, "this prophecy is fulfilled in the Passion of Our Lord."1
